This art is famous for its exceptional kicking and jump and flying techniques.its viewed not only as an extremely effective self-defence system,but also a very popular international Olympic sport.it comes from “tae” meaning to kick or jump;”kwon” meaning hand or fist and “do” meaning the way!
Taekwondo was originally developed in korea in 1950s when a group of leading martial arts experts came together to unify their respective disciplines under a single fighting system.the inauguration took place in South Korea on 11 April ,1955.
The first world taekwondo championship took place in Seoul South Korea 1973.since 1988 taekwondo has been listed as an olympic sport.
There are three main sections in competitive Taekwondo :
*Sparring :
Sparring involves practicing fighting techniques to develop timing ,focus and speed.the aim is to score points through the delivery of correct techniques to target areas.
*Patterns :
Patterns are a set series of combination techniques performed in a sequential order against an imaginary opponent similar to Kata in karate and forms in kung fu.
*Destruction :
Destruction refers to “breaking techniques” in which practitioners learn to break the objects like pieces of wood.
The aim is to ensure that the power and skill are truly effective benefits of taekwondo are included but not limited to:
*health and fitness
*flexibility and stamina
*comradeship
*self defence skills
*stress reduction
*positive attitude
